Jimmy sighs, looking back at Dean as he hung up the phone. He tried to remind himself the hunter was only trying to figure everything out. It didn’t help that one of his friends shared his body.

“Sure. I could use something to eat.”

Dean led Jimmy to the car and drove to a diner. After they ordered, Dean looked at Jimmy curiously. He didn’t envy him. Dean had no idea what it must be like and Dean never wanted to.

“So… you remember Cas? But you don’t have any of his memories? You have no idea what might have happened to him?”

When they arrived at the diner, Jimmy was relieved it was a different one than the one he’d been in earlier. He orders and frowns a little in Dean’s gaze. This was not going to be an easy conversation.

“Most of what I remember of Cas, is from before. When I was talking to him. Or when I asked the second time… so that Claire could live a normal life. I don’t really…” He pauses trying to think of the word. “I’m not normally conscious. I guess is the easiest way of putting it. I don’t see all of what he sees. I get scraps of things on occasion. Like the demons face I’d seen it before. Just a glimpse really. But it was there all the same. The only thing I know is that the demon told me he’d sent Castiel back home.”

Dean sighed and looked at the window. So Cas was back in heaven. That was good he supposed. But Dean what state he was in when he returned and he had no idea how to get him back.

Someone might though.

“Maybe Balthazar could help us…” Dean was just talking out loud by this point.

He blinked then, realising something.

“Jimmy… do you want him back?”

“Balthazar…” He repeated quietly. The name seemed familiar from something. He shrugged to himself. There had been so many names in his head since the angel had taken him as a vessel it was hard to decide which were important and which weren’t.

He looked down at his hands. What did he want? In all honesty as much as he wanted to be with his family Amelia had thrown him out. Twice now. What was the likelihood she’d let him walk back in this time. From what he remembered heaven wasn’t exactly a friendly place for Castiel right now. What would happen to him if Jimmy said no this time? But if he said no. If he went back to his family. Claire was still young enough he wouldn’t miss her graduation. Or her wedding. He wrestled with the question for a long time, before he realized the answer wasn’t that he wanted Castiel back. But rather that it would always come down to Claire and himself. He looked up at Dean. “I said yes once… even begged him to let my little girl go. I can’t back down. I understood the last time, when I made the decision there wasn’t any going back.”

Dean looked at Jimmy curiously for a moment. It hit him who brave this man truly was. To give up eveything because of his faith. And some reward he’d had.

After they had finished their food, Dean stood up. “I’ll take you back to out motel, get you checked into a room. Then we’ll find Sam and Jo.”

When their food had arrived. Jimmy had eaten eagerly. Maybe he’d work that into the deal next time. Just remember to eat. He felt a bit odd eating so quickly. He’d never eaten very fast, but when you haven’t eaten in months, it’s really all you can do not to shove it into your face.

He nods at Dean. From the sounds of it the conversation with Jo would probably be one of the most awkward he’d ever experience. It felt a little like living a double life. “Alright.”

Dean smiled slightly and drove them back to the motel. They found a room for Jimmy. “We’ll sort this out. Somehow. But thank you. For… agreeing to help.” He gave Jimmy another smile before disappearing to his own room and collapsing on the bed.

Tomorrow was going to be complicated.

Jimmy passed a hand over his face. There were so many people that would kill for immortality, but this was really not the way to go about it. Being an angel’s vessel was possibly the least pleasant experience any one could go through. And he’d even seen Hell. It looked nicer. At least he’d have died then.

He pinches the bridge of his nose, huffing a short laugh. “Yes. I know. I’m his vessel. He had to get me to say yes. Both times. And if it meant my family got to keep living I’d still say yes, but…” He trails off. “How long has it been? Since I was me last? Since I told him to take me and let my daughter live a normal life?”

Dean looked ahead, knowing Jimmy wouldn’t like the answer. “Two and a half years…”

Dean looked down, thinking carefully. “Look. I need to talk to Sam. And Jo. They… have to know. When we’ve done that… we’ll see what we can do. About seeing your family.” Dean couldn’t ask this man to stay away from this family again. It wasn’t fair.

His head dropped, staring at the ground in front of him. Two and a half years? It could be so much worse, but still… how much have I missed? He swallows hard trying to keep emotions in check.

He passes his hand over his face again. “Alright. Fine.” He says finally, an edge to his voice as he fights the torrent of emotions he’s feeling.

“Look, I am sorry, Jimmy. I’m sorry you were dragged into this. But I’m just as confused as you are right now. We need to figure this out before we try anything…”

Dean pulled out his phone. “I’ll call Sam, find out where he is…”

He moved away from Jimmy slightly, shaking his head and dialling Sam’s number.

Jimmy looked away from Dean. There was really not much of a reason to be mad at him. He had called Dean, but what else was he supposed to do when he’d just woke up with no idea of where he was and there were two names in the cell phone in his pocket that he recognized.

He was tired. He was hungry. He missed his family. And more than anything he felt disoriented. He waits rather impatiently as the hunter calls his brother. Ahh. There’s that feeling of being babysat again.

Dean hung up the phone with a sigh. “Dammit, Sammy…” he whispered. He looked over at Jimmy. The poor man looked more confused than other.

"Fancy a burger?"

Dean had no idea what to do. Cas was… gone. He didn’t think the idea had quite sunk in yet. That’s why he wasn’t currently throwing his fist at a wall.

Instead, he calmly got in the Impala and made his way to the park, although he was probably driving a little faster than usually. And he didn’t want to think about Alastair yet.

Dean pulled into a space beside the park. He looked around and spotted Cas… no, Jimmy now. Dean walked up with a sigh. “Err… hi, Jimmy…”

Jimmy looked up upon hearing his name. “Dean.” He nodded. He’d been brooding sitting at one of the benches. He just wanted to know where he was and what was going on.

He sighed a little. “Thank you for meeting with me. I just don’t know what’s going on.”

Dean scoffed bitterly. “Yeah, you and me both.” He sat down on the bench, looking around the park for a moment before speaking. “And you don’t remember… anything?”

“No. Very little of it anyway. All I know is I woke up on the floor of someone’s apartment covered in my own blood with some guy standing in front of me!” His voice raises a little in frustration.

Dean heard the frustration in his voice and sighed. He didn’t really want to tell Jimmy who that was. he obviously didn’t have any of Cas’s memories. “That was Jo’s apartment… Shit. Jo. I’ll have to call her. That will be a great conversation.” Dean sighed again running a hand through his hair. Despite trying to stay calm, his heart was racing. Alastair topside, Cas in heaven. At least, he hoped… not to mention the necklaces. He seemed to Dean they were back to square one again. Everything against them.

“Look, Jimmy… I… need you to stay here. I need to get Cas back…”

“Jo…” He frowns a little. “Castiel was dating her?” He asks the question simply. The demon had mentioned a girlfriend. He might as well find out whether he’d been told the truth or not.

“Stay here? So yet again, you’re telling me I can’t go see my family. I’m cut off from them again. But God knows when I’ll have the chance to see them again. God knows I wasn’t supposed to get this one.” He tries very hard to keep his emotions in check. But it just wasn’t fair.

"Yes. Jo was Castiel’s… girlfriend. I haven’t seen her for a while though." He should now, Dean thought.

Dean sighed once more and closed his eyes, knowing that would be coming. He thought carefully before speaking. “Yes, Jimmy, I need you to stay. But I can’t force you to. If you need to go see your family, fine, go. But… whatever is going on here- and believe me I have no idea either- it’s bigger than us. And I need Cas’s help to fix it. You’re his vessel, Jimmy. He needs you…”
